Market Research Project
Futuristic
Modern shapes, plastic fabrics and crazy cut outs are a huge trend on the runways. Sculptured silhouettes in unique shapes, and abstract designs are popular among top designers like Alexander Wang and Stella McCartney. Monochromatic looks in white and geometric prints in unusual plastics give these designs a "space age-y" effect. Stella McCartney used a selection of metallic foil-like fabrics to create a modern and edgy take on futuristic. Overall, the collections look clean and simple, but these modern designs are breaking us into a new year for 2012 full speed ahead.
Androgynous
With transsexual model Lea T and the "femiman" icon Andrej Pejic amoung the androgynous models who strutted on the autumn/winter 2011/12 runways, this season, all the coolest girls will be borrowing from the boys, with pinstripes, felt suiting, white shirts and trousers providing a fresh riff on tailoring, white silk ties, cummerbunds and overcoats pack a manly punch.
Feminine curves were literally enveloped under this masculine aesthetic, as the super-sized, slouchy cuts and jackets and overcoats shown at Stella McCartney, Nicole Farhi, and Alexander Wang proved. The whole look is pristinely tailored, come label it as sophisticated glamour, it's the epitome of feminine meets masculine.
Native
This print originated from Mexico and it has long been worn by tribesmen. The traditional and original Aztec print depicted the appreciation of animals. But today's Aztec print combines the abstract and the traditional design.
These looks found their richness in their details. From intricate embroidery at Anna Sui to tasseled triumphs at Versace and Matthew Willamson, the artisan appearance of these pieces lent them an upscale glamour. Mixing fabrics and textures also brought an injection of luxury as seen at Kenzo, while print was key at Missoni. This season a big focus is on feminine pieces given a harder, tribal inspired edge.
The Roaring Forties
This Autumn/Winter 2011-2012, designers including Frida Giannini, Miu Miu, Prada and Donna Karan have ushered in a season of sheer forties glamour. Complete with furs, pearls, gloves and shrugs- all revolving around the pencil skirt. Hemlines have dipped to a strict- yet elegant- on the knee length that is at once feminine and very alluring.
Gaulitier kept it sexy by adding a revealing thigh-high slit to the pencil skirt, while Jonathan Saunders steered away from a predictable interpretation on through the use of unexpected colour combinations.
While Giannini, at Gucci, distilled all the glamour of the decade into her show with fedores and pussy bow blouses thrown into the mix, it was at Miu Miu and Marni that we found what we'll be wearing in our downtime- pretty tea dresses.
Contrasting colours and combinations of texture kept the trend modern and edgy yet it still possessed the elegant vibe the forties is all about.
Minimalism
The clean-cut, distinctly grown-up clothes from the catwalks hark back to 1990s minimalism. Clean sharp lines created tailored pieces with a softer appeal, more romantic feel. As seen on the at Celine, the Autumn/Winter '11 collection streamlined the female figure, with a selection of more fitted pieces in dress form.
Balenciaga used the shoulder as an anchor for the fabric to fall away from the body, creating a more volumised, bulkier silhouette. Simplicity and luxury combine to devise an elegant yet modern product.
Gothic
This look is not for the faint-hearted wearer (or spectator) - with latex, PVC and leather playing a starring role in the trend. Embrace the subtler side of this trend with suggestive sheer inserts, leather panels and black lace. And, if you're going to vamp it up in leather, rubber or PVC, make sure it's oil-slick shiney and only ever in black.
Gareth Pugh and Ann Demeulemeester took a more edgy and modern take on the gothic revival whereas Elie Saab created a romantic and alluring collection with soft ruffled lace and delicate embellishment.

Joyce Forsyth
When in Edinburgh I found this knitwear designer shop, was in such a rush for bus to airport I couldn't go in but took note of the name..
Not what I expected but then I don't know what I expected!
Colour was the first thing I noticed and it is not my taste AT ALL but I admire her for her work.
Really different to any other knitwear designer not main-stream and very cultural feel about it.
Heres her link http://www.joyceforsyth.co.uk/ and some pics of her work :)

Fashion Illustration
So I've been trying to practise my drawing skills, just putting different fabrics onto mannequin using different drawing materials etc...

Have my pattern for skirt all laid out so on fri (next day off) I'm going to make the skirt :)
So here is some of my drawings, going to keep drawing and move on to Fashion Illustrations :)

Summer...
Okay I've been neglecting my blog since college ended.. :(
Have a few projects lined up based on architecture.. something completely different to the rest of my projects so I think it will be more challenging and interesting.
I'm basing it on my Semester one project (which was influenced on an arch) really liked the project and can't wait to start designs :)
I've been knitting away swatches but in really thin woo,l finding really thick yarn is way harder than I imagined :(
I'm also waiting on the book we were told to get to be delivered should be soon :)
Visited Derry recently got fabrics and two different patterns :D A skirt and top, fixing my sewing machine at the moment but once its up and running its sewing time :D

Stripes, stripes, stripes :)
Its after easter now, and I think I'm still recovering from ranking :O started a new project on stripes.. it's so weird you don't think of things when they're right infront of you but now I'm seeing stripes everywhere :) I'm basing mines on trees and bark so there very organic stripes, huge contrast on my last project ( which was based on antiques ) but I'm liking the whole new approach :)
Its a swatch project so no final line-up or final garment which I'm finding hard to get my head around, I like the idea of working towards a finish piece. This project is helping lots with presentation skills, layouts etc :)
kinda in a rush have to catch the bus to limerick soon so I cant post pics of some of my swatches right now but tomorrow I'll have them up :)

fashion ranking project...
Okay so far so good, I feel like I'm slightly behind on work I want to get my shapes completed today and have my final shapes my this evening. I got 16 swatches of fabric manipulation completed yesterday, pretty happy with that.. :D
I'm trying to work away on my knitting at home between swatches, designs etc but I think I might leave my design work until the weekend for the knitting.
We had drawing with Phillipa yesterday, have a way better idea now on what we have to d, so went into a few charity shops up town and I couldn't really find anything, I'm thinking a men's suit jacket or something but not sure, lets hope I'll know when I see it.. :)

Fashion Presentation
Theme Development
Enclosure
At first enclosure didn't appeal to me at all, but once I started my research it immediately caught my attention. I started by looking at different ways of being enclosed or restricted.
I then narrowed it down to a few; the images that I researched for barbwire and different types of walls or fences. I decided to go with these ideas as it made me feel enclosed in a space looking at the images of barbwire etc. Also it had a sense of being kept out which interests me.
Electric
I immediately think of pop art the 80's and 90's so thats the route I decided to go down. Bright colours, 'in your face' images and text interested me. So I kept looking up pop art from those decades mostly, and it was Andy Warhol's prints that I decided to stay focusing on. The quirky images and colouring scream 'electric' to me.
Decay
Rotting wood, corrosion, erosion, rust are all things that I imagine when I think of decay. I loved the colours of rust, the burnt oranges, reds, browns and the texture of the wood. The brittleness and vitreous of the wood crumbling off is what I decided to focus on. I took images of diifferent woods, one in particular I really like the way it shows the different layers of paint etc.
Tribal
I first researched the different types of tribes, deciding on focusing on African tribes gave me so much to work with, colours, textures etc. I looked at the individuals within a tribe but I decided to gather more research on voodoo and the rituals involved. Voodoo masks became the focusing point in this theme.
Memories
Memories was the theme that jumped out at me and caught my attention straight away.I think of war times, WWI, WWII etc. The 1920's is my favourite era so I started looking at different images from that time. Looking at things that can hold memories or hold things that can trigger memories lead me to antiques, treasure boxes, trinket boxes, lockets. I visited an antique shop and I found so much to work with. General antiques and jewellery dating back to the 1830's.
Fabric Manipulation
Gathering
Consists of small folds or puckers made by pulling tight a thread in a line of stitching; creates ruffles.
Quilting
Quilting is a sewing method used to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. The materials are attached together in a series of seam diagonals to form a diamond pattern, however a stitched design of any kind can be used.
Folding/ Origami
The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finishes sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, such as the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.
Pleating
Pleating is a fold in material made by doubling the material upon itself and then pressing or stitching it into place. The pleating both stiffens and gives volume/ structure to the material.
Twisting
To twist a material is to alter its shape, by turning the ends in opposite directions, so that the parts previously in the same straight line and plane are located in a spiral curve.
Boning of Fabric
Adding steel, plastic bones to the inside of a fabric to create structure and a rigid shape. Ridgelene is the most common.
Knitwear Techniques
Ribs
A rib knit is a garment produced using a style of knitting pattern which yields a distinct vertically ridged pattern. Created by alternating strips of stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette.
Moss stitch
Works on multiples of two stitches; Rows 1 and :Knit one; purl across. Rows 3 and 4: Purl one; Knit across. Repeat these four rows for pattern.
Loop Stitch
Any sewing stitch formed of connected loops. The loop stitch is a crochet stitch that creates soft, bulky loops of yarn.

Cables
Cable is a style of knitting in which textures of crossing layers are achieved by permuting stitches. For example, given four stitches appearing on the needle in the order ABCD, one might cross the first two (in front of or behind) the next two, so that in subsequent rows those stitches appear in the new orderCDAB.
Ladder Stitch
A vertical stitch using four pleats. It gives the effect of steps on a ladder.
Ridged Eyelet Stitch
Eyelet patterns generally have fewer openings than out and out knitted lace patterns; and eyelet patterns are characterized by small openwork motifs distributed over a solid stockinette( or other closed-stitch pattern) fabric.
Simple Lace
Lace knitting is a style of knitting characterized by stable "holes" in the fabric arranged with consideration of aesthetic value.
Tubular Knitting
Circular knitting or knitting in the round is a form of knitting that creates a seamless tube.
Medallion ( Five needle knitting)
Medallion knitting produces flat knitted fabrics that are circular or polygons using a technique similar to the crochet of doilies, by progressively increasing or decreasing the radius.
Increasing/ Decreasing/ Shaping
Increasing: This can be done anywhere in a row, this is where the increase is made on the first or last stitch in a row.
Decreasing: This is the shaping that makes your work narrower.
Striping & Intarsia
Intarsia is the term used to identify a knitting project using blocks of colour where the yarn is not stranded or carried across the back.
